Siphoning digital technology through a 19th Century technique (using an iron-based photo process resulting in deep blue images), these cyanotypes are faceted gothic flashes of disturbingly humorous images representing my interest in what is simultaneously beautiful and macabre. This is Beauty, Girls deals in multiplicities: the frightening, ridiculous, sad, innocent, cartoonishly erotic and unsettling.
In this exhibition, the viewer was meant to see the handcrafted element in each image. An elixir combining nostalgia and imperfection, a history is built into them as they are made, obliterating the original hard, crisp digital edges.
The brush strokes of the cyanotype liquid are apparent in the finished work. And by using a copy machine that was in slight ill-repair on the negatives, I was able to create the illusion of linen texture. So, the work has an inherent handmade, authentic quality.
In addition to my cyanotype works, I am editing my new video, FRED, a portrait of a life-long criminal. And raising funds for my feature length film, MELODY.
